Oregon Rules & Regulations

The law requires Oregon home inspectors to have:
1) Earn 20 points of approved home inspection education (PHII is fully approved)
2) Pass the National Home Inspector Examination (PHII's home inspection training course fully prepares you)
3) Pay the $150 Application Fee

PHII's Online Home Inspection Training Course is approved by the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) for all 20 points of pre-license education. PHII's Advanced course prepares you to take and pass the National Home Inspector Examination.

Oregon law requires individuals who bid, offer to perform or perform home inspections of two or more components to be certified by the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB). Home inspectors must complete 30 hours of continuing education courses to renew their home inspector certification every 2 years. Each certified home inspector must also be an owner or an employee of a business licensed with the CCB.

The main purpose of Oregon's home inspector licensing and certification is to provide financial protection for consumers. An individual can verify an Oregon home inspection business license number (CCB) and the home inspector certification number (OCHI) at www.oregon.gov/CCB to determine if the home inspector's license and certification are active and if there are any open complaints filed against the business.

Oregon businesses that perform home inspections get licensed with the CCB as a General or Specialty Contractor. This means you must have a $10,000 or $15,000 bond and either a $300,000 or $500,000 liability insurance policy.

Additional Steps to Advance Your Oregon Home Inspection Career

1) Join a Professional Home Inspector Association. PHII pays for your first year of membership in the North American Association of Home Inspectors (AHI). Many states also have their own home inspector associations you can join for networking opportunities.

2) Join a Multi-Inspector Company in Oregon to gain experience, or start your own business. Established home inspection companies in Oregon are always looking for new home inspectors to work for them. Businesses provide benefits, professional insurance and home inspection scheduling.

3) Register Your Own Business in Oregon and obtain general liability insurance and/or errors and omissions (E&O) insurance. Home inspector insurance policies are affordable and will protect you against career-ending lawsuits. Build your own home inspection business in Oregon and enjoy the success that follows!
